Exorcisms

Last night, perusing the scriptures, a story from Mark spoke volumes to my soul.

Christ and his disciples come across, “a man with an unclean spirit.” (Mark 2:4)

The text describes the man as always being in the mountains and tombs, “crying and cutting himself with stones.” (verse 5)

Self-harm has been a serious epidemic in modern-day Israel–in life and in media.

A hot show on Netflix actually glorified suicide. To me this is a sign of the times. The power of the wicked one is growing stronger.

Let’s return to Mark 2:

6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,

7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

I believe Legion has returned to the earth, and that anyone who is self-harming has been possessed by this unclean spirit.

Last night I actually recognized that I, myself, was carrying the spirit of Legion. Over the last year this has brought me back into depression. As a teenager, I self-harmed and was filled with hatred for myself.

I’m sure everyone knows at least one person who struggles with these same issues.

In Mark, the possessed man received deliverance by worshiping the son of the most high God.

Last night I did the same and received peace of mind, clarity, and abundance of charity.

This morning I came across a very frightening video:

Not only is this exploiting mental illness, it is ENCOURAGING participants to allow the demons to take control.

After watching this video, I felt inspired to share the story of Mark.

Worship Christ.

It is our only deliverance from this fallen world.

May you be filled with love of our Heavenly Father, and share it with the world.

  1. I just read this chapter a few nights ago, and I’ve been pondering the abilities and power of these “evil spirits”. I believe they are having their way on the earth right now. As a mother I can see their affects all around. The one thing I’m wresting with is D&C 29, which says Satan cannot tempt children, but I wander when evil spirits can start to have an influence on them. By my experience as a mother I don’t believe these two are the same, but I can’t find scripture to back up my opinion. Anyway, great post, thanks for sharing!

  2. Mark 9 tells the story of a boy who was afflicted with an evil spirit. Christ asks how long he has been afflicted and they answer, since he was a little boy. Satan may not be able to tempt little children, but evil spirits can definitely possess the bodies of little children.

  3. When I read in Mosiah 3:6 “and he (Christ) shall cast out devils, or the evil spirits which dwell in the hearts of the children of men.”, I think this says a lot. I believe many negative conditions can be attributed to this very thing. I also believe that as we speak the name of Jesus Christ, we can rebuke them and we need to do this often. I’ve been working on this and feel like it helping. Through Christ and His name, we do have power over them and power to cast them out. I also believe that everyone, including children, can be affected. Sometimes whe I’ve been around children who are acting way out of control, I’ve rebuked the evil spirits in the name of Christ and it has improved the situation. I think with all the media, including shows that children watch, and I know children who are young who are watching shows way to mature and violent for their age, the evil spirits are invited in. Those are some of my thoughts. Thanks for your post!
