I believe in guardian angels.

I believe every single one of us has an angel assigned to us that is keeping watch over us.

Although it sounds like a worldly concept, I think it derives from God’s truth. I realized it while reading through the gospels.

Something that resonated more deeply than before was the account of Christ’s suffering in Gethsemane.

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

It is profound that an angel from heaven appeared to strengthen Jesus as he was in the Gethsemane.

This was the angel of his presence.

Isaiah foresaw this event:

8 For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.

9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

–Isaiah 63

In ALL of our afflictions, Christ was afflicted.

We commonly feel empathy towards those we love. We feel afflicted when they are afflicted. It is a burden to have empathy for one another, but this is part of our design. We are, “joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him.” (Romans 8:17) Part of our walk with Christ is carrying a portion of that suffering. But our experience of suffering is a mere speck of his.

Imagine feeling every single affliction of every single individual.

Christ carried the deepest pain that ever were possible. “Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore.”(D&C 19:18)

In his love and pity he has redeemed us. He bears us, and carries us into the days of old.

However, the angel of his presence also had a role to play in this. Because an angel appeared to strengthen the Lord, he performed this preparation unto mankind. This is often over-looked, but has to be important.

An angel came and strengthened Jesus Christ. The angel of HIS presence.

I am now going to make the case that we each have an angel in our presence that strengthens us and enables us to perform our work unto God. With that said, I’ll now make it clear that I know Jesus Christ can perform anything of his own merit.

I find the example of the angel an example similar to him needing to be baptized. These accounts are God’s way of teaching us something.

Mathew 18:

10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

What exactly is Christ saying here?

At its core, this is a warning to be kind to children. In another place, he says it’s better to be drowned in the sea than hurt a child! But the interesting thing about Mathew 18:10 is that he gives a reason for not hurting children.

He says that THEIR angels behold the face of the Father.

In effect, each child has an angel.

That angel is watching what happens to them.

If a child is harmed, then the guardian angel will speak for that child at judgement day.

Many unrepentant sinners become such because they were wronged as children. Being abused at an early age destroys that child’s agency. I believe their future sins will be heaped on the abusers head.

So that verse proves children each have their own guardian angel.

But does that angel go away once the child grows up?

In a sense, I do suspect so.

Because we grow up and become sinners, our angel must begin to shy away.

But what did Christ tell us?

He said, “Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” (Mathew 18:3)

When we are converted, we become as little children, and children have guardian angels.

That means that we receive our guardian angel again!

Of course, we shouldn’t get carried away with this and seek to have a relationship with an angelic companion. For me it’s a comforting thought, and it rings true. These are just my thoughts on the matter.
