“In the image of his own body, male and female, created he them, and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created and became living souls in the land upon the footstool of God.” (Moses 6:9)
This is a curious passage from the Joseph Smith Translation of Genesis.
Even in the King James Genesis, God refers to both Adam and Eve as a single individual. They are both considered, ‘Adam.’
The JST adds some clarification that they were created in the literal image of God’s ‘own body’. This leaves no room to debate what ‘image and likeness’ had inferred. We know that our bodies were literally designed to look the same as Jesus’ body.
Obviously, none of us look exactly as Jesus Christ. We all look differently. But I believe in the resurrection, when we are joined with our male or female counterpart, to become one flesh as the scriptures indicate, we will then be in that same image.
“…the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body.” (Phillipans 3:20-21)
I take this scripture literally, just as I take the phrase “one flesh” literally.
I believe all celestial bodies will be fashioned to look the same as Christ. This is only possible if we are joined together with our soul mate. I use the phrase ‘soul mate’ which is secular, but it accurately explains what the scriptures teach.
The JST of Genesis makes it very clear that Adam and Eve came forth out the same spiritual creation. We learn that on the sixth day man was created, but this was spiritually. Only until the seventh day was that man made into a living soul on the earth.
That spirit, which was both male and female, was created as Adam.
Eve was then taken from Adam. They were originally composite spirits, and were at one point the same body even. After Eve was taken from Adam, I believe this is when Adam no longer had the same image as Jesus Christ.
This is the case for all of us. Before we came here, we were originally genderless spirits. Our spirit was split in half as both male and female; and now, to receive a fulness of God’s glory, we must reunite with the other half of our spirit.
I realize this seems like a radical concept, that it does not appear conclusively in the scriptures, but I think the reason for this is that it is not something that will ever be commonly accepted. It’s not something people want to believe, but I think the followers of Jesus Christ have understood it in one way or another.
In the New Testament, Paul spoke very little of this mystical relationship between the sexes, but he seemed to know more than he let on.
“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” (Ephesians 5:31-32)
Judging by that scripture, it seems to me as though Paul knew more than he was allowed to say. He was commanded by God to speak concerning Christ and the church. The mysteries of God were not meant to be universally broadcasted. I believe only those in tune with the spirit will be able to read between the lines and understand the great mystery that Paul kept to himself.
Earlier in that chapter, Paul says, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it…” (v.25-26)
The love between spouses is the power to SANCTIFY. Just as Christ sanctifies his believers, his believers then have the power to sanctify their spouse. This is reiterated in Corinthians:
“For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband.” 1 Corinthians 7:14
How is this possible? Because they are essentially the same person before God. They are both created in the flesh from the exact same spirit. Therefore, they carry the same sins and the same righteousness.
Again, I realize this is a radical concept.
Here’s a piece of scriptural evidence:
“And Adam was not deceived, but the woman…” 1 Timothy 2:14
Consider that, and read this:
“The devil tempted Adam, and he partook…” D&C 29:40
We all know that it was Eve who was deceived and partook, but in the D&C we hear God saying that it was Adam. This is because God looks at both Adam and Eve as the same!
Adam and Eve are the same spirit, yet two living souls, and are thus responsible for each other.
I came to believe this by reading D&C 49:
“…marriage is ordained of God unto man. Wherefore, it is lawful that he should have one wife, and they twain shall be one flesh, and all this that the earth might answer the end of its creation; and that it might be filled with the measure of man, according to his creation before the world was made.” (v15-17)
In other words, marriage has been ordained that a man might have one wife so the two of them can be one flesh in the resurrection. When this happens, they will fulfill the measure of their creation. This is according to their original spiritual creation BEFORE the world was made.
Marriage is ordained for soul mates!
To me, it couldn’t be any clearer.
I believe this is why the teachings of Jesus Christ are so strong about marriage and divorce. Our first marriage, regardless of how good or bad it is, is the only marriage that is legitimate in the eyes of God. There is no such thing as divorce in celestial law.
This is also why polygamy is, of course, not of God. “From the beginning it was not so…”

the marvelous work 
My wife and I also believe this concept and call it ‘composite beings’. I was first introduced to the idea of composite beings in the apocrypha and then found corroborating evidence in the scriptures. Here’s three of the most interesting quotes from the Gospels of Phillip, Thomas and Mary.
(Gospel of Phillip) When Eve was still with Adam, death did not exist. When she was separated from him, death came into being. If he enters again and attains his former self, death will be no more.
(The Gospel of Thomas) They said unto him, “If we then become children, would we thus enter the kingdom?” Jesus said unto them, “When ye make the two one, and when you make the inside like unto the outside and the outside like unto the inside, and that which is above like unto that which is below, and when ye make the male and the female one and the same, so that the male no longer be male nor the female female; and when ye fashion eyes in place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, and a likeness in place of a likeness; then will ye enter into the kingdom.”
(The Book of Mary) For a woman the spirit takes a male form. A woman in her spirit nature is a man. For a man the spirit takes a female form. A man in his spirit nature is a woman.” At this there was discontent and muttering from the disciples. “But how” they asked her “can we say that a man is a woman in the spirit? Are we to be womanish like a woman? We are men not women.” And she said to them, “In the kingdom of heaven there is no male and no female. When god made man he made him complete as both male and female. But they were then separated, the female was split from the male. Thus did death come into the world. But in the kingdom what is split will be reunited. A woman must find again the heavenly male who is her husband, a man must find his wife. When you are united with that one then you will be both male and female, hermaphrodite again as man was at the creation.

I have been intrigued lately that man was created only spiritually on the the 6th day, and placed into bodies on the earth afterwards. I believe that God rested on the 7th day (Moses 3:2) and then created the physical body of Adam on the following day (Moses 3:7).
What I find interesting is that after the creation of flesh, God THEN planted a Garden – it wasn’t there to begin with. God then commanded Adam to not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and charged Adam with naming every living creature. I imagine that this took a while, perhaps more than one day. Only after all that was accomplished did God create Eve (Moses 3:22).
So my question is: how did the narrative in the temple become entirely flip-flopped? Why are we taught that Adam and Eve were created almost back-to-back, and then BOTH given instruction in the already completed garden?
